Young Planetary, who?

we caught up with Zach from young planetary to learn more about the band in itself and where they have been!

AR: So lets jump right in with how did you guys meet?

YP:Strangely enough, we had all been a part of the Boise music scene for many, many years, but had never really run into each other. 

Initially, Young, Planetary was our singer’s solo project. He had several different iterations of the band, but could never really lock anyone down solid.

So, when Zach approached him after a show and asked to join, the ball really got rolling. After that, our singer’s dear friend Sarah introduced him to her now husband, Adam, and the two of them met up at a practice space in Boise called the Hive and had their first jam sesh.

Needless to say, it was love at first sight. And once our singer, Zach, and newest member, Adam, started rehearsing in the same room together, we knew we needed a killer bassist to fill out the lineup.

Thankfully, we knew the right guy for the job and immediately asked Trevor to join the ranks and start ripping gigs.

Since then, we have played countless shows together, toured together, hit the studio together, and further solidified our chemistry as musicians.  

AR: So how long has the band been going for ?

YP:The project is about 5 or so years old, but the current lineup has really only been at it for a little over a year.

AR: As the band has been going for a long time you must have some strong inspirations to keep you motivated through the years right?

YP:This is another one that’s hard to answer because we come from such different backgrounds. We love everything from punk rock and hardcore to prog metal and jazz. So, really, we just try to stay as open minded as we can with the music we listen to and try to stay constantly inspired by what’s coming through our headphones. 

AR:Thats a wide spread of inspirations and from listening your music for a while I haven't been able to put a genre on your band, what would you say your bands sound is ?

YP:We like to tell everyone that we are a post-hardcore band, mostly because we incorporate so many different genres into our sound. But, it’s open to interpretation. All of our songs are so much different from one another. So, it’s really hard to fit into one specific genre. But, we really like that about our band.

AR: Heres a simple question, what is your favourite concert you've ever played live ?

YP: We have been really fortunate with our live shows. Our first gig together was opening for Emery. We played a basement with Anarbor and Sundressed. We have shared the stage with some of our favorite regional and national touring acts. And we got to travel around the Pacific Northwest and beyond playing to all kinds of new faces. So, really anytime we get to be on stage together is going to be our favorite.  

AR: Thats so cool!have you ever thought about collaborating with anyone in particular?

YP:Honestly, being able to team up with an actual producer would be a dream come true for us. We have each separately worked with some really awesome people in the industry. But, if we were to team up with someone like Will Yip, or Sam Pura, or any of the other producers that are putting out our favorite records these days, that would be incredible. Just to have someone give us input on our songs and offer up their suggestions and opinions would be an opportunity that we wouldn’t pass up. 

AR: So the final question, what can we expect for the band in the future?

YP:We have been quiet for a while, but we are currently in the process of locking down some studio time so we can work on our next release. It’s going to be a 6 song EP comprised of some older songs and some brand new songs and we really think it’s going to represent us and the direction our music is headed more so than anything else in our discography. So, definitely be on the lookout for that!
