So I spoke to John Morris the Bassist and backup vocalist for Big Smile.
A little information on the band before we head to the questions, they are a five piece band from Cincinnati Ohio consisting of Scooter Smith the lead singer, Ethan Saling on guitar and vocals, Noah Jatczak playing lead guitar and Cameron Hayes drums and not forgetting John.
AR: This is always a funny question to ask, there always some funny responses, so how did you guys meet?
JM: Scooter and Ethan started writing songs together a couple years ago, then Cameron who was in Scooter’s old band came on to play drums. I joined last year through a Craigslist ad and Noah came from another band he and Scooter were in together.
AR: So the bands been running for quite a while now, who writes the song for the band and whats your personal favourite one ?
JM:Scooter is the main lyricist in the band. As far as the music itself Ethan wrote most of the music to our first couple EP’s. Since Noah and I joined it’s turned into a process of the 3 of us throwing ideas out and building on those.
Our favorite song we’ve put out so far is Wit’s End. It’s our highest energy song, the crowd loves and we close with it every show. Our favorite song we’ve written though is one we just wrote this summer. It’ll be on our next EP so stay tuned for that to come out eventually!
AR:I know most of your songs are Upbeat and high tempo, who inspires your music the most ?
JM: Our inspirations range from some bigger pop punk bands like The Wonder Years, Knuckle Puck and Real Friends, to kinda more obscure bands like Microwave and Tiny Moving Parts. We love the energy that some of those bigger bands bring to their music, and especially with Microwave, the way they go about writing lyrics is so unique and interesting so we try to emulate that a bit.
AR: You've played many shows throughout the years, whats been you favourite one?
JM:I have 2 favorite shows we’ve played so far. There was the show where we shot the music video for Wit’s End in Covington, KY, and a basement show we played in Cincinnati a couple weeks before. Both of those shows had really intense crowds and everyone had so much energy and it was a lot of fun.
AR: So how did you get into playing music? or music in general?
JM: How I personally got into playing music was through Green Day’s American Idiot. It was the first album I ever fell in love with and I learned guitar by playing along with it. To this day it’s still my favorite album of all time. Over the past 10 years or so I’ve gotten into other different styles of like punk and alternative rock, everything from similar bands to us like Knuckle Puck and Microwave to like Breaking Benjamin and the 1975 and a lot of different style bands. I try to bring influence, if not to songwriting for the band but just to my bass playing, from all these different style bands.
AR: you were heavily influenced by bands like Green Day and Knuckle Puck who have made an immense impact on the music scene, if you were to say anything to your fans right now what would it be?
JM: For our fans, thank you so much for all the support and love you’ve given us so far from day 1. We’re almost done writing for our next EP, we’ll be recording it in November and December and we’re super stoked on it, so look out for that in early 2019! We’re planning more and more shows in and outside of our hometown, and we can’t wait to meet and connect with so many new people.
